Ramos Gin Fizz
Another cocktail classic in our list of cocktails for you is the Ramos Gin Fizz. There are plenty of ways to annoy your barkeeper, one of it is ordering a couple of Ramos Gin Fizz at once – as if ordering one isn’t hard enough! If you’re wondering why – this article is for you.
The Ramos Gin Fizz is an absolute prototype of a cocktail classic. It has tradition, is hard to master and its origin is one of the cocktail capitals of the world – New Orleans. Sounds promising and so is the drink itself (once it’s done). But you have to work hard and keep an eye for the details to create this little gem. But first let’s talk about the ingredients…
- 6 cl Dry Gin
- 3 cl whipped cream
- 1 egg white
- 1,5 cl fresh lemon juice
- 1,5 cl fresh lime juice
- 2 cl simple syrup (2:1)
- 2 – 3 dashes orange flower water
- Soda water
Put all ingredients -except the soda water- in a shaker with four to five medium sized ice cubes. Shake strong and long enough so the cream and egg white can combine and create that beautiful foam. Strain into a cold Collins or Highball glass and fill up with soda water.
How long do I have to shake a Ramos Gin Fizz?
I just wrote “long enough” so the cream and egg white can combine. While that’s definitely not wrong you still don’t have an idea how long you should shake. In general I’d say at least 1-2 minutes, if you are in doubt shake a little longer. If you don’t shake long enough the result will look quite disgusting (still drinkable). You can also follow the original recipe – but I guess you don’t want to shake your drink for 12 minutes. At least I don’t want that 😉
If you want you can also do a dry shake first to get a better texture of the foam. Some say you need to do that others state you should skip it and just shake a bit longer. It depends on you – but if you have problems to get the consistency right that’s one thing you should consider when creating your next Ramos Gin Fizz.
Can I use something else than orange flower water?
Well, you can but it’s not gonna be the same drink. I saw people using orange juice (please don’t even think about that) and ruining their drink. If you want a Ramos Gin Fizz then please use the right ingredients – and for the orange flower water there’s no real substitute that’s easy to get. You should us the right thing with the right amount.
Just by using it your drink is not saved, you still can ruin it by using too much of it. Stick with just 2-3 dashes – not more! Using too much of it will turn your beautiful Ramos Gin Fizz into a soapy, foamy something.
